Blog #3, Daniela Talamantes Martinez

Hello again!

This was my first week of helping out with the "Paint & Clay" camp. There were seventeen students, as well as a student with special needs. From each morning of setting up the supplies, to the end of the day cleaning up, it was a great experience to help with the student programs. Today was the end of the week art show, where each student set up a space in the studio with their week's worth of art, and were able to showcase their portfolio to friends and family. Even though it was a hectic week of messiness and excited energy, it was well worth it to see the smiling faces of proud artists and parents.

Today, I was also able to take the students into the folk art gallery, and talk about a couple of the pieces in an impromptu presentation; this experience allowed me to teach on the spot, and attempt to engage young students. I was able to speak in front of a young audience, and project my perspective, which I believe were valuable lessons to practice. I also learned from one of the museum's art educators that it is important to not be a controlling teacher, but to be a lenient teacher, that prompts the student to answer the question, and explain their observations. This practice allows the students to learn and connect with the art pieces or the other students.

Next week is the "Monsters and Mythological Creatures" camp, and I will work with another art educator. I am looking forward to assisting the teacher, and help the young campers with their art camp experience.

Till next week,
Daniela Talamantes Martinez
