Christian Xavier Pelaez - The Children's Museum of Houston

Hello Everyone

Well as the title says I am completing my internship at the Children's Museum of Houston. It is an absolutely fantastic place; the staff is wonderful and everything is great.  I have only been interning for 2 days, but the experience has been surreal. Everyone is extremely helpful and patient. I have received many intricate tasks such as making copies and packing kits. Nonetheless, I have enjoyed my time at such institution. The Children's Museum of Houston partners with community centers and many summer programs to continue educating children during the summer. Every week the museum sends out "kits" containing pencils, markers, and fun educational activities to these summer programs. My job is to make sure everything is in the kits and in the correct amount. Next week I will actually be working with children in the museum itself on the Kidtropolis exhibit. Kidtropolis is a simulation, if you will, of the real world. It contains: a city hall, a bank, a hospital, police station, post office and many more indispensable buildings for the success of a society. I am looking forward to this so I await my return to work on Monday with anxiety. My tasks have completely opened my eyes to see how exhibits and, museum executed programs are made from the production point of view. I know now that running a museum is most definitely a difficult task, to which a single individual cannot perform alone. For a team of intellectually gifted individuals such as those working at the Smithsonian Latino Center are necessary. My tasks have helped me realize that teaching others is not easy, teachers suffer greatly making lesson plans and actually preparing material like I have for the past 2 days. I believe I will learn many things at the Children's Museum of Houston and I am greatly honored to have been chosen to intern there. Just like the Young Ambassadors Program changed my life for the better I believe interning at the Children's Museum of Houston will reinforce the structurally sound foundation I built during the Washington Week Experience.  I would like to thank the Smithsonian Latino Center for allowing me to be a member of the Young Ambassadors Program. It has been a true blessing and it is with great pride that I can call myself a YAP alumni and I am excited for the future and I am anxious to give back to the community and help those struggling in life.

Thank You

Christian Xavier Pelaez
