Crystal Vargas: #3

Hi everyone,

This previous week I had the opportunity to facilitate my own demo on the main floor. My demo was about the solar system because I mentioned to my supervisor about the mini planetarium presentation they showed us. I had to show the children how to make a pocket sized solar system and they get to see how far planets and other objects are really spaced out. It reminded of me the activity we did during Washington Week when we did the program on our laptops at the SLC about the solar system. Sometimes it was hard getting the kids to stay long enough since a lot of parents or field trip counselors want to rush to get through the whole museum but some actually stayed.
I also help the kids with this activity called snap circuits. I like this activity because it is very interactive and the kids seems to enjoy it quite a lot. They get really excited when they turn on the motor or light bulb and it is not that difficult to explain how it works. It is kind of interesting to see how the kids think about how it works. One time there was a field trip group came in while it was my shift with the snap circuits and it got quite hectic since we didn't have much materials and some kids did not want to share. All in all, with these two experiences have taught me how to work with children and interact with them.
The museum was planning an event on Friday night surrounding the idea of bubbles but we were still developing ideas. The other intern and I had a challenge to see if people would want to create designs with bubble wrap, syringes, and food coloring in water. It was kind of hard to do it at first because we were both trying to play with the sizes of the syringes and how to actually insert the water into the bubble wrap without it popping. We had tried this idea before so we made sure we made the right adjustments. We ended up trying to make this design of Mario. Unfortunately, I was unable to go to the actual event and see other people's designs.
