Daniela Talamantes Martinez, San Antonio Museum of Art, Blog Post #1
Hey y'all :3
In the two days I have been in the San Antonio Museum of Art (education sector, or “the stables”), I have been asked to research programs that will draw in more teen and student participation in SAMA events and exhibitions, and more specifically: ways in which the latino community can be better represented in the museum/select exhibitions. In addition to the research, I have been prompted to choose an object in the museum (specifically the latino gallery), that speaks to me, research it, and create a presentation to the education board (as to imitate a museum teaching experience). I gained insight into the amount of planning it takes to create a teaching agenda, not only for children’s programs, but for other educators as well. I have gained appreciation for the art activities I warranted as “too simple,” as I now understand what depth they hold to the growing children's mind. My experience in observing this agenda-building has allowed me to think deeper into how I might peak the interest and intellect of young students. I now propel forward into learning more about children’s interdisciplinary arts education in the museum and beyond. I believe this motivation has started in the Washington Week experience, as I delved into the workings of many intellectuals who are educators for our society. My internship experience connects with the mission of the Youth Ambassadors Program, as both the museum’s education sector and I wish to incorporate many disciplines into art and museum education. We wish to urge young artists and students to both acquire their own insight about certain topics, and to connect with other students, their teachers, and beyond the museum. To connect and communicate is to learn and thrive. I look forward to participating more in the children's camps in the following weeks.
