Deja Royal Blog #2
During the week, I continued to do what I did last week. I was placed in galleries/floors I hadn't yet been in. Everyday, I was given the task to find a new exhibit in each gallery and become familiar with it. Following this task, I learned about the Hercules beetles and the Goliath beetles. I also leaned how to make a paper helicopter.
In becoming more comfortable working with the people who visit the Science Center everyday, I was taught different ways to engage the visitors. I was taught how to spark interest in a guest and how to teach a guest something without it feeling like teaching. It was really fun seeing the way the children reach when they learn something cool. I would say this technique has increased my level of knowledge on the inner-workings of this museum.
I have also learned from the other volunteers. They've given me pointers on certain exhibits they find the most interesting.
At the beginning of the week, some of the volunteers, including myself, created a paper mache "Death Star" (We paper mached over a beach ball). These "Death Stars" were blown up with liquid nitrogen as a demonstration, so many of the guests had the opportunity to watch it blow.
On Friday, I was delegated the task to run a table at the gallery I was at. I was in charge of giving each participant a 6 by 6 square piece of aluminum. The participants were told to make a boat that would float in the bowl of water we had. If it floated, the participants were asked to place marbles in the boat until it sunk. The top score for Friday was 35 marbles, and the overall top score is 42.
