Hello everyone,
This past Thursday I had the amazing opportunity to begin my internship at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) located in Long Beach, CA. On this first day, my responsibilities were pretty simple. I was required to create a sign in sheet for the students who will be participating in the museum’s Summer Art & Culture Camp using Microsoft Excel. I was also required to find materials necessary for some of these workshops in the museum’s art room.
On Friday, I did research on possible food vendors and entertainers to come to the museum’s Caribbean festival. After conducting this research, I printed the sign in sheets for the museum’s camp, which will begin on Monday, July 10, 2017.
All in all, these experiences have helped me increase my knowledge on the inner-workings of museums because I learned how there are many responsibilities when it comes to planning major events that are held by them. So far, my internship experience has increased my knowledge of Microsoft Excel to the point where I am confident in using this application for any future task. I have been able to see how my internship experience is connected to the Smithsonian Latino Center’s (SLC) mission to ensure that the contributions of the Latino community in the arts, history, national culture and scientific achievement are explored, presented, celebrated, and preserved. I have seen this mission being fulfilled where I am currently interning because I have seen how these contributions are being presented, celebrated, and preserved in the museum.
Although I spent my first two days in front of a computer screen for most of the time, I am enjoying what I am doing here at MOLAA so far. I am definitely looking forward to the next few weeks!
