Jesus Lino - Week 2

Hello everyone,

This week, my assignments revolved around the museum’s Summer Art and Culture Camp. I was in charge of taking photos of what the children were doing in different workshops. With these pictures, I made a PowerPoint for the parents to see in the program’s Open House (which actually took place today). Besides being a mini-photographer, I also helped the teachers with the kids and completed designated tasks.

One memorable part of this week was going with the kids on a field trip to El Dorado Nature Center. This place was BEAUTIFUL, and it was relaxing to take some time off from the office (not that I hate being there or anything lol). Hearing what the kids had to say about nature and bonding them was also amazing!

Today, I had to be the emcee for the camp’s Open House (it wasn’t as serious as it sounds). I only had to say a little bit, which was good because I don’t know about all of y’all, but I am bad with improvising. I helped prepare for this event by printing out the titles for the kids’ exhibitions and creating certificates for the participants.

Overall, this week was really fun! I actually enjoyed working with kids more than I thought I would. Similar to my experience last week, my experience this week taught me how the inner-workings of museums is more difficult than it appears. A lot of time and work goes into planning events and workshops, and I am beginning to understand the skills that are required to make these events successful. My internship experience this week taught me how to communicate with kids. It also taught me how to make educate them in a fun way. My experience this week connects to the Smithsonian Latino Center’s (SLC) mission to ensure that the contributions of the Latino community in the arts, history, national culture and scientific achievement are explored, presented, celebrated, and preserved because I saw how Latino contributions in the arts were explored and celebrated by the children during this week’s summer camp.

I have successfully completed 1 week as an intern at MOLAA! I am definitely looking forward to Summer Art and Culture Camp Week 2.
