Jesus Lino - Week 3

Hi all,

This week I did not spend as much time with the campers as I thought I would. However, I got to do other amazing things! I received the amazing opportunity to apply vinyl on the museum’s wall for one of their exhibitions. This was really challenging because of the exact measurements you need and because of the vinyl being difficult to apply in some instances. I also created two lesson plans for teachers to use. This was really straightforward, except for the fact that my mind went blank, so I struggled with coming up with creative activities.

Like last week, I also created a PowerPoint for parents to see in the camp’s Open House and helped out with the camp. I got to meet new kids this week, and these kids really enjoyed teasing me about my age and another girl. They would say that I did not look like a 17-year-old (which is true) and that I liked a camp volunteer (which is not true). I also received the opportunity to visit an urban farm in Long Beach with the kids this week. Although it was really hot, I enjoyed my time there.

This week, I saw how much time and patience goes into making sure the exhibitions are presentable. I noticed this when I was applying the vinyl and realized that I had spent almost an hour applying only two paragraphs. My internship experience has taught me how to use art to educate others in an interesting way. My experience also connects to the Smithsonian Latino Center’s (SLC) mission to ensure that the contributions of the Latino community in the arts, history, national culture and scientific achievement are explored, presented, celebrated, and preserved because I am seeing how new Latino contributions are starting to be presented at MOLAA (Museum of Latin American Art).

Ultimately, I have enjoyed my internship experience at MOLAA. This week had me exhausted, so I am kind of glad to be able to relax this weekend. I definitely am looking forward to next week, though.
