Mayahuel Garcia Post 3

Hello
This week I had my outreach event with the kids at the Mosqueda Community Center. I was a bit worried that the kids wouldn't like me and they would be too much to handle. In reality, the kids were pretty great. The older kids were not as intrigued but it made sense since story time is mostly done from kinder to 2nd grade. I asked them questions to keep them engaged and for the most part, they interacted. There was a moment in Drum Dream Girl when they say only boys can play drums. I asked the kids if they thought it was fair. All of them said no and one boy gave a response. It was a very heartwarming moment. They were a couple moments when they were a bit rough like fighting over markers or not sitting down. Overall it was a great experience and I'm glad I had that opportunity to read and hold an activity with kids. My dad is a substitute (used to be a teacher) and I now understand why he has come home with a headache for the last 20 years. At Arte Américas, I continued to organize old newspaper for their archived files. While I was looking I found some interesting articles. I found a lot from 1993 and 1994 about Cesar Chavez after his passing. There was a small movement to name one of Fresno's main streets after him and my mom was in one of the pictures. There were also articles about a march and UFW revitalization around the time. That was mostly it for this week. This following weekend, I am supposed to hold another community event similar to the outreach at Mosqueda. My supervisor wants me to read Drum Dream Girl since the author Margarita England is from Fresno. We will be inviting her to the event so we are crossing our fingers that she will be able to attend. I'll make sure to take pictures when it happens

Have a great weekend!
Mayahuel
