Crystal Vargas: Blog Post #1

Week 1- My internship is located at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and I am highly involved with the science sector of the museum. The majority of what I do is interact with the guests and make sure the area I am stationed is running smoothly. There is a machine which is called the bed of nails and I make sure no accidents occur and explain to the guests how it works. I also explain a machine called the momentum machine where a person can spin really fast which is pretty cool. There are so many cool things and activities I can do that there is too many to describe. Aside from that I also sometimes do special assignments with my supervisor.
On Monday, I was able to sit in on meeting with a local university research institution where they wanted to somehow introduce robots to see how the public interacted with them by showcasing them at the museum. Before this trip I did not know how developed these robots were but then they showed us a video of a robot picking up a bottle and a cup and actually pouring liquid inside of it. I also got to try out some HoloLens where you can see holograms. That evening I was in a meeting where they were planning an event around the lunar eclipse that is happening on August 20th.It was interesting to see how they partnered with other institutions and organizations to make sure they incorporated different parts of the community into this one event. They were also thinking about the details on how to attract people such as having lunar eclipse shaped cookies(really cute) and different marketing techniques. This meeting reminded me a lot of what we did for our project during Washington Week.
On Wednesday, I got to sit in a meeting where they were developing a program about Harry Potter (Book 4) that will be shown over the entire museum. This meeting was a little different because they had people from all the areas of the museum chip in ideas for the actual program. It was similar to what we did during Washington Week when we were barely developing the content of our app. They were thinking of the different ways people can market such as hashtags, flyers, etc and who it will most likely attract. The meetings that I was able to sit in helped me see what really goes on behind the museum especially the programming aspects.
On Thursday, I had a quick assignment working on this cool activity my supervisor was developing for her program centered around bubbles. I was trying to fill bubble wrap with colored water. Another intern and I would poke syringes with colored water into the bubble and fill them up. Later that afternoon, a group of high schoolers came to the museum and I got to share my experience with YAP to them. We did another activity called spin art which consisted of a plate spinning on top of a motor while drawing on it as it spun.
