Rocio Chavez: ¡explora! - Blog #1

Hello,

As an intern at ¡explora!, I’ve been serving as a tour guide for school groups, from grades K-8. These last three days I’ve lead one tour per day, the rest of the day I spend working at the prep table. There I prepare materials for various exhibits that ¡explora! Offers, and have also helped the summer camp leaders organize materials for workshops. Unfortunately my supervisor is on vacation until next Tuesday, which leaves outreach activities for next week.

Throughout these three days I’ve met some of the staff and volunteers at ¡explora!. Everyone is happy to be there and interact with the children that visit the museum. This motivates me to attempt different ways of communication with my tour groups. Every day I learn something different. Most of these things I learn by observing children experiment with the exhibits.

At the Air Flow exhibit, there is a station where children take pictures of artificial landscapes and dinosaur toys to make a movie, similar to Stop Motion Studio. During one of the tours, a kindergartener was extremely excited to see that he could take pictures of his favorite toys and create a movie. He asked me if he could take the pictures home, but was a little upset when I told him that the pictures could not be printed. During that time I recalled a conversation during Washington Week, with one of the speakers. I had mentioned that ¡explora! had an exhibit similar to Stop Motion Studio, they told me that the idea of this app was for guests to take the memory with them, rather than to leave it at the museum. That moment with the child proves that the concept of and app such as Stop Motion Studio would be perfect for ¡explora!.

I am thrilled by all the opportunities that ¡explora! offers, both to guests and to the people working the museum. I look forward to the next three weeks with great excitement and an open mind.
