Alezandro's Blog Post #2
On Monday, July 10th, I attended a Community Committee Board meeting with Chicana/o elders who played a crucial role in El Movimiento during the 1960s and 70s. What I thought would be a formal meeting ended up being more casual and relaxed than I had imagined, with chisme sessions that made me feel like I was in my own living room. As I continued to listen to each elder share their thoughts on the El Movimiento exhibition, I realized there was a much more complex division happening.
Some elders were committed to showcasing the Chicano Movement through a lens of respectability politics while others wanted to emphasis the radicalness in hopes to mobilize today’s youth. This ‘traditional-versus-progressive’ dynamic reminded me of the discussions that took place at Washington Week. I reflected on how we expect the non-Latinx public to be understanding of the unique experiences Latinxs face while also denying trans, gender non-conforming, and genderqueer Latinxs their humanity.
On a separate topic, I was able to attend a symposium called Art of Access, which discussed how to make museums accessible to those with disabilities across the spectrum. I was able to connect with people from all over Colorado who are in museums and others who specialize in working with disabled folk. While not in meetings or symposiums, I am working on the exhibition that will be opening up in September.
Con safos,
Alezandro
