Atlanta History Center-Getzamany's Blog Post #1
Hello Young Ambassadors,
I’ve enjoyed my first week at the Atlanta History Center. It's been a slow start while they were introducing me to how things work here. I've had simple tasks to complete, but I’ve met phenomenal people and learned new things.
My first day started with a staff meeting on an exhibit they are working on called NUEVOlution. "¡NUEVOlution! is a large-scale, bilingual, multi-dimensional, interactive exhibition that uses personal stories to examine the complex stories of Latinos in the South." I was incredibly honored to be the only Latina sitting at the meeting and was lucky to address any of my concerns. Afterward, I was given a tour of the museum and learned about the other new projects they are currently working on. The following day I was able to start working on ideas for the programming for NUEVOlution. I am really excited about this since it will be in winter. I am planning a night full of pan dulce y chocolate caliente for the guests! As for the rest of the week, I was reaching out to Latino organizations in the area who want to participate in the preparation, advertisement, and programming of NUEVOlution. Aside from working on NUEVOlution stuff I have been filing documents and organizing storage closets (this is actually fun since they let me play my own music). My internship has not been as eventful as Washington Week, but as I miss the intensity of our schedules I am looking for other methods to get further involved in the museum.
As my first week comes to an end I am happy to be interning at the Atlanta History Center where I have learned more about museums and their outreach. I have also quickly realized that for a museum to function there is a lot of workers and volunteers. A lot of people are definitely making the magic happen at AHC.
Finally, I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will hold for my personal and professional growth.
Thank you, YAP (ambassadors, support staff, staff) & Washington Week for giving me the confidence to find ways to excel throughout my internship experience.
Saludos,
