MIM Week #4

My last week at MIM is bittersweet. I feel like it's only been a few days instead of four weeks! This week I finalized the translation of chaperone guides and had it checked over with Niki, Cristina, and Ileana. It's awesome that the education department has decided to make this small but impactful part of field trips available in Spanish; I'm sure it'll be greatly appreciated throughout the year by schools. I worked on a project along with Niki, for a STEM segment MIM wants to add to the field trip portions. The project consists of rope, hot glue, key chains, and musical instrument tags. It will be used to show the exact length of that instrument, for example the length of a trombone when it is completely uncoiled. Two prototypes were made and they'll choose between which works best for children.  I also learned how to laminate during this project and how to prepare receipts to be sent to finance. After receiving and answering many emails regarding the Back to School Refresher for guides, I got to put a face with the name on Friday. Niki gave a presentation for guides on the new things that MIM and tours will be doing and some slight changes that were made. It was cool to hear about how awesome an awesome job guides have been doing and the new things the upcoming 2017-2018 year will bring. Today was my goodbye lunch because my last day is tomorrow. It was so nice ! Lunch was on Brian (many thanks) and it was great to hear Randi, Niki, Daniel, and Brian's "wise words of wisdom" about college haha. Tomorrow is Teacher's Preview Day and I am excited to see what it's like! The baskets are full of back to school goodies and will be raffled tomorrow.  As a future educator, I am glad MIM does so much for teachers. :)

Hello everyone! This has probably been one of the most interesting weeks while I was here at the Museum. On Thursday, was "Tres Museos," a San Antonio event where a max of 200 school teachers visit the San Antonio Museum of Art, and then are bussed to the Witte Museum and McNay Museum. After check in, I helped the educators with the "slow-looking" tours in the Japanese gallery and the contemporary gallery (viewing the painting, "Temptations of Saint Anthony"). It was a wonderful opportunity for elementary and middle school art teachers to be exposed to the museum and possibly bring back new lesson plans to their classrooms.  I also was able to go into one of the operations warehouses with my supervisor where all the gallery building materials where stored. Week #2 - Ariela Algaze

This has been, to say the very least, one of the most eventful weeks of my life. Over the past week, I have:  - Held a 1603 edition of Shakespeare's sonnets in my hands (at the Folger Shakespeare Library) - Gotten trapped for two hours in the rain (not. fun.) - Seen a painting so marvelous I burst into tears (a Rembrandt self portrait at the National Gallery of Art) - Dealt with the horror that is the DC Metro system (So many broken elevators!) - Had the best milkshake of my life - Talked with the legal director of the ACLU - Thoroughly enjoyed (but not participated in) a spoken word open mic night Of course, none of that has to do with my internship. Hello, I started my internship in the middle of this week and have been lucky enough to start with small chores. Most of the staff were on vacation so I didn't get to meet everyone. At Talento Billingue de Houston, they host events like film showings and art exhibitions. They focus on new artists from different athnicitues but more on the Latino communities. I have done flyers for upcoming theater shows and organized the accounting records and translated some documents from English to Spanish. Being at this cultural organization, I realized how much money and time it takes to keep an educational center running. I also realized that being bilingual is extremely important because most people, including latinos, don't know Spanish. I'm excited for next week because the summer arts camp for kids will be returning from break and that means I get to help more, meet new people, and be with the kids. Kassandra
