Atlanta History Center-Getzamany's Blog Post #3

Saludos a todos,

I apologize for the delayed post, but with interning at the AHC, working for Panda Express, and preparing for college to say I've been busy would be an understatement. For my third week at the Atlanta History Center, I helped out with the Summer History Camp. The theme this week was the Renaissance where campers got there "da Vinci on"! The campers were able to "recreate some of the science, math, art, and architecture that made the Renaissance one of the most celebrated time periods in world history" with my help. While facilitating a lot of the workshops throughout the camp I was reminded of the hands on-workshops we also had during Washington week. However, things were a bit more out of control than during Washington week considering the age range I was working with was 6-11. Surprisingly, in comparison to the week before these campers remained eager and excited about all they were learning about which made my responsibilities a lot easier to fulfill. I enjoyed working the Summer History Camp this past week because I was also able to participate in the projects the kids were doing like making a candlestick and preparing yarn from the sheep on the AHC farm. I was also outside in the sun playing games with the campers which helped me relax and remind myself that there is still room to behave like a child. Their energy is definitely contagious and so by the end of the week, once they were gone, I realized how I exhausted I truly was. By then I also recognized how much fun I had working with the campers and getting to know all of them.
Overall, I enjoyed working with kids more than I thought I would. I learned to be more patient and also more forgiving with the kids. I also feel a sense of accomplishment with how once camp ended a lot of the campers approached me to give me some their crafts "to remember them". I am 3 weeks done with my internship and gearing up to complete my last week at the Atlanta History Center. I can truly say it's been a wonderful ride.
