Christian Pelaez - The Children's Museum of Houston

Hello Everyone

The second week of my internship was pretty great. I was assigned to multiple educators and have been given projects to work on. These projects consist of me making games more interesting and keeping kids focused, not a simple task, but definitely something I can do. I have also worked with BASF the chemical company in experiments dealing with water filtration and the mixing of chemicals to make interesting substances. I have also been sent out on outreach programs which consist of me going to summer camps and teaching children how to play educational games, pretty cool I must say. Working at the museum's galleries is absolutely fantastic; the learning that occurs is simply breath taking. Many children leave the building with much more than just memories, they leave with an education, a new way of doing something and that is truly amazing. They are the future of this country and with the way the children are learning, many different things at such a young age, I do dare to say the future is looking very bright.

I must say that I am excelling at my job here at The Children's Museum of Houston, but I do attribute my success here to the Smithsonian Latino Center and more specifically the Young Ambassadors Program.

Rocio Chavez: ¡explora! - Blog # 4

¡Hola a Todos! The fourth week of my internship with Explora was busy, but very fun. I had the opportunity to get to know to the staff and volunteers better. I continued to give group tours and doing prep. I also helped in the summer camp called “Chemistry in the Kitchen”. Although I was always busy with something, I felt comfortable in the working environment that Explora offers. The tour groups, as usual, went great. It’s amazing how I’m still learning from all the museum floor areas and exhibits. Children are the teachers at Explora, they are the ones that “think outside box’. Every time I asked them what they were doing, they responded with something that I would’ve never imagined could be done at that exhibit. The number one rule at Explora is to “touch and experiment everything”. “Chemistry in the Kitchen” was for children from grades 2-3. Hi all,  Miami, Florida has been an adventure lately. The commute to and from the Museum has been an adventure.  On Saturday of last week, a fellow Ambassador, Maria, and I toured Little Havana that was facilitated by the History of Miami Museum, of which she is an intern for. I was amazed to learn that a lot of the history that was discussed I was not aware of. I did not know that a Santeria tree was in the middle of Little Havana or that the locals (current practicers) left chicken heads in Sedanos bags at the foot of the tree.
