Deja Royal's Blog Post Week #1
Hi,
I started my internship on Wednesday. I spent this day on a scavenger hunt that allowed me to explore the entire science center. I had never been to the center, so this was a really good way to start off. The center is more targeted towards children, but I still really enjoyed going through all the floors.
Thursday was my "first day". I was placed on the second floor with another volunteer. The second floor's gallery is all about physics. My goal as a volunteer is to engage with the guests, especially the children. I have been taught different ways to talk to children about the science behind the fun because most of them only pay attention to the fun. My favorite exhibit on the second floor is a bed of nails. It's fun to see hesitant children get on the bed because it doesn't hurt the way they imagine it.
On Friday, I was placed in two galleries. I was on the first floor during the first half of the day, and I went back to the second floor after lunch. Feeling more comfortable, I tried harder to engage with the children. It felt really rewarding when I noticed two little girls intently listening to what I was saying about an exhibit of the lungs.
I have learned that museums do not run by themselves. They need willing people to make things happen, so I am interested in volunteering for the center after my internship is over.
