Nancy Contreras-Alejandre's 3rd Post (Adler Planetarium- Chicago, IL)

Hello!

This week has been filled with many great moments. For example, on Monday I was able to assist in giving my teen co-workers from other departments a tour of the collections department. From this, I was able to view the importance of Museum and astronomy history. The following day I was able to partake in a video call with a NASA Curator. This curator told us about his experiences in the sciences and in his professional career, along with witty tales to remind us that life is not all about hard-work, even for those with high professions. In addition, the teen interns and I were taught how to develop solar-heating equipment in order to make smores. While this was not as easy as we intended it to be, it was definitely a fun challenge for most of us. Finally, I completed my first project in the collections department with the historic photographs and began my second project on digitizing historic data for the Adler’s equipment and artifacts. Throughout this project, I have been able to sit-in on another meeting regarding the Adler’s collections, and began to view how the finances are managed for conservation. For example, two of the largest projects are the Adler’s digitization project, and the improvement of Adler’s Conservation system in order to preserve their collections.

Because of these many roles, I have been able to test my different interests, and view the ones that fit my personality the best. I have also been able to gather crucial advice from professionals in order to begin to prepare a plan for college and beyond, and I have been able to view the importance of prioritization while viewing the Adler’s thought process for future financial plans.
